y family acquired our first Newfoundland while I was in high school. Her name was Kodi and she came from a puppy mill. Unfortunately Kodi developed a number of orthopedic problems as she matured but was a typical Newfoundland in temperament.
While in college I acquired my second Newfoundland, Chablis, after what I thought was a lot of research. Chablis ended up with what we now know as forelimb anomaly . After 4 major surgeries at Ohio State University she ended up living a long healthy life but having a breeder who had no interest in her problems was disheartening.
In 1992 I purchased my foundation bitch Taylor from Diane Broderick of Amity Newfoundlands in New Jersey. The following year I purchased my second foundation bitch from Kathy Hamilton of Old Bay Newfoundlands in Virginia. I have to thank them as well as many other breeders that have mentored me along the way. You helped me get a great start into the world of Newfoundland dogs.
I also must thank Becky Reynnells who came to stay at Top Shelf in 2004. With her help showing and grooming the dogs Top Shelf has achieved awards beyond any of my expectations.
Last but not least – a big thank you to Amy Lane of Allegiance Newfoundlands who I have co-owned dogs with over the years. She has spent countless hours developing and updating our new Top Shelf website. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Redland Boerboels is located in the heart of maple forests near Abernethy Creek in rural Oregon City, Oregon. Our dogs are part of our family and are tried and tested in both conformation and utility work. Our goal is to produce Boerboels that are athletic and energetic, with outstanding temperaments and proven reliability that are excellent for home and personal protection and companion animals. Temperament, working ability, health and structural soundness are all equally important in our breeding animals.
One of the most important factors in breeding dogs, (especially the German shepherd dog) is in the quality of your breeding program. Naturally, you would think that if we bred “THE” champion sire to a champion dam, we would eliminate all genetic risks. This is not the case.However, with a superior pair of dogs we can establish a solid foundation to overcome problems in the future. We ventured out into the world of obedience competition in 1984 with Duffy, our very first Scottie. Within a year of his arrival the show bug had bitten and we acquired our very first AKC confirmation scottie from breeders Sue & Gary Carr. That was 30 years ago. During those years we’ve made up approximately 30 champions. Excellent health, sound temperament and structure have always been uppermost in our minds when planning a breeding. We take advantage of all available testing to ensure, to the best of our ability, the health of our Scotties.
Jerry Barnes, owner/trainer of Jerry s K-9 located in Phenix City Alabama, is a military retired veteran after 20 years of service. Jerry has been training and breeding dogs for over 30 years.
